German Cinema:
Beyond the Screen
October 23, 2026
19:00-21:00
Journalist and documentary filmmaker Igor Sadreev runs a popular YouTube channel with film critic Anton Dolin and spends his free time collecting stories about German cinema. On October 23, he invites you on a journey to the other side of the screen.

This is not an academic lecture, although you will certainly discover plenty of new things about the history of German cinema — from the silent masterpieces of the 1920s to the blockbusters of the 21st century. It is an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of Germany and the Germans — and perhaps ourselves as well.

How did Nabokov knock on the doors of Berlin’s film studios, and how did the director of the great “Metropolis” escape Goebbels? Which German film did Stirlitz watch six times — and what do Germans watch every New Year? Why did director Werner Herzog walk all the way from Munich to Paris (that’s 775 km!) and how did Mikhail Gorbachev make his way into German cinema?

And also: Angela Merkel’s favourite film, an erotic hit of Soviet video salons, and the most cinematic cucumbers you’ll ever see.
