Dr. Konstantin A. Kholodilin has been a research associate at DIW Berlin since 2005. He received his doctorate from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain) and completed his habilitation at the European University Viadrina. His research focuses on the real estate industry. He has published numerous articles in international academic journals and regularly gives lectures—both at professional conferences and to non-scientific audiences.
Between 1960 and 2025, housing expenses more than doubled. This is partly due to rising real estate prices. However, over the same period, the size and quality of housing have improved dramatically. One could even speak of a "housing quality revolution," as there is a vast difference between our living conditions today and those of our ancestors. Drawing on hard data, we learned how many square meters, rooms, bathrooms, and toilets people had at their disposal 70 years ago, where we stand today, and what we are likely to see in the near future.
